Merit has been —in the best cases— misunderstood and deviated from its noble principles and honest initial intentions of fairness. This distortion has been reinforced by culture and society, reducing it simply to authority and ad-populum appellations as the only criteria for deservingness.
Today, the remains of merit, as an arbitrary but justified construct, have worked more to expand the economic asymmetries rather than to reduce them, and their advocates solipsistically have undermined competition systems by ignoring the role of external variables when evaluating individuals.
These patterns of opportunity and resource allocation, contingent on capital and social networks to a variable extent, which make evident their systemic flaws are becoming more and more unsustainable.
Underestimated founders often have to grow their startups working more time, with fewer resources, and smaller teams. These founders do more with less, making up for the lack of resources with effort and time, and eventually deliver similar or even better results than founders with greater access to resources.
As a result, some of them end up being more talented and skilled, hence, endowed to reach high levels of performance in order to stand out from the crowd. Yet they’re still left behind in favour of tribalism, credentialism, ethnocentrism and even cronyism, and find themselves with higher demands for the same opportunities.

AI as an agnostic tool can help us to solve very deep problems that contribute to human development or it can go in the opposite direction and insert in the existing structures and accelerate the asymmetristic tendencies.
